Ingredients
For the Batter:
- ¼ cup fresh cream
- 1 tablespoon custard powder
- ½ cup milk
For Assembling:
- 6 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or your preferred variety)
- ⅓ cup Lotus Biscoff spread (or a similar spread like Nutella or peanut butter)
- 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting the rolls)
Optional Toppings:
- Additional melted Lotus Biscoff spread
- Powdered sugar
- Fresh fruits like strawberries, blueberries, or bananas
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the French Toast Batter
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the fresh cream, custard powder, and milk.
- Whisk until all the ingredients are well combined and the custard powder is fully dissolved. The batter should have a smooth, creamy consistency.
- Set the bowl aside for later use.
Step 2: Prepare the Bread
- Cut the edges off each slice of bread to remove the crust, giving it a clean, uniform shape.
- Use a rolling pin (or a bottle) to gently flatten each slice of bread. This step helps make rolling the bread easier and ensures that the bread absorbs the batter well.
Step 3: Spread the Biscoff Filling
- Take a generous spoonful of Lotus Biscoff spread and evenly spread it on each slice of flattened bread. Be sure to cover the entire surface, leaving a small border around the edges.
- After spreading, carefully roll up each slice of bread, starting from one edge. Roll tightly but gently to ensure the filling stays inside without spilling.
Step 4: Coat the Rolls in Batter
- Dip each rolled-up bread slice into the prepared batter, ensuring the bread is fully coated. The batter should soak into the bread without being too soggy, so don’t soak it for too long.
Step 5: Toast the Rolls
- Heat a non-stick frying pan or skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter.
- Once the butter has melted and is sizzling, place the rolls in the pan, making sure not to crowd them.
- Toast the rolls for about 2–3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. You may need to adjust the heat if the rolls brown too quickly.
- Once done, remove the rolls from the pan and place them on a plate.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
- For an extra indulgent touch, drizzle melted Lotus Biscoff spread on top of the toasted rolls.
- You can also sprinkle some powdered sugar over the rolls for a sweet finishing touch or add fresh fruit on the side for a refreshing contrast.
Notes
1. Don’t Overcook the Bread
If the bread rolls are overcooked, they can become too dry or too crispy. Keep an eye on the rolls while they cook and flip them gently once they’re golden brown on one side.
2. Use the Right Amount of Butter
Don’t overdo the butter in the pan. While you need enough to ensure the rolls toast evenly, too much butter can cause them to become greasy. One tablespoon should be enough.
3. How to Tell If the Rolls Are Done
The rolls are done when they are golden brown on the outside and slightly crispy. You can also insert a toothpick or knife into the center to check for any wet batter. If it comes out clean, the rolls are ready!
4. Make Ahead
You can prepare the rolls the night before and store them in the fridge. The next day, just dip them in the batter and toast them. This saves time if you want a quick breakfast or snack in the morning.
5. Prevent Soggy Rolls
To avoid sogginess, ensure the bread is flattened well and dip it lightly into the batter. Over-soaking the bread can cause it to lose its structure and become soggy while cooking.
