Ingredients
Scale
- 1 round loaf of bread (sourdough, whole wheat, or any crusty bread with a firm structure)
- 1 package (10 ounces) frozen spinach, thawed and drained
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 packet (1 ounce) ranch salad dressing mix
- 1/2 cup finely chopped cooked chicken or beef (optional, for added protein)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Spinach Dip
- In a large bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, and ranch dressing mix. Stir until well blended.
- Squeeze out excess moisture from the thawed spinach. The best way to do this is by placing the spinach in a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth and wringing out the water. This step is crucial to prevent a watery dip.
- Add the drained spinach to the sour cream mixture. Stir well to distribute it evenly.
- Mix in the finely chopped onion, basil, oregano, and garlic powder. If using, add the chopped cooked chicken or beef at this stage.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour. This allows the flavors to meld together, creating a richer taste.
Step 2: Prepare the Bread Bowl
- Take your round loaf of bread and cut a 1.5-inch slice off the top. Set it aside.
- Using a knife or your hands, hollow out the bottom portion of the bread, leaving a thick shell that can hold the dip. Be careful not to cut too close to the edges, as the bread needs to be sturdy enough to support the dip.
- Tear or cut the removed bread into bite-sized cubes for dipping.
Step 3: Assemble and Serve
- Fill the hollowed-out bread bowl with the chilled spinach dip.
- Place the bread bowl on a large serving platter. Arrange the torn bread pieces and any additional dippers, such as sliced vegetables or crackers, around the bowl.
- Serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Notes
How to Tell if Your Dip is Well Mixed
- The spinach should be evenly distributed throughout the dip without clumps.
- The texture should be creamy but thick enough to hold up when scooped with bread or vegetables.
What to Do If Your Dip is Too Watery
- If the dip seems too thin, add a small amount of cream cheese or Greek yogurt to thicken it.
- Ensure you have squeezed out all excess moisture from the spinach before mixing.
Preventing Soggy Bread
- Do not fill the bread bowl too far in advance. The longer the dip sits in the bread, the softer the bread will become.
- For best results, keep the dip separate and fill the bread bowl just before serving.
Substituting Kitchen Tools
- If you do not have a bread knife, use a serrated knife to cut the loaf more easily.
- A mixing spoon or spatula works well for combining ingredients, but a whisk can also be used for a smoother texture.
- Prep Time: 15 minutes (plus 1 hour chilling)
