Ingredients
- 3 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (525 grams) – Semi-sweet chocolate gives the perfect balance of sweetness and richness, but you can substitute with dark chocolate for a more intense flavor or white chocolate for a sweeter option.
- 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk – This adds sweetness and a creamy texture. Be sure to use sweetened condensed milk, not evaporated milk, as they are very different products.
- 2 tablespoons butter (30 grams) – Helps create a smooth texture and enhances flavor.
- 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional, 125 grams) – Nuts add a slight crunch and extra richness, but they can be omitted or replaced with almonds or hazelnuts.
Instructions
1. Prepare Your Baking Dish
Line an 8-inch square baking dish with parchment paper or aluminum foil, leaving some overhang on the sides. This makes it easy to lift out the fudge once it sets.
2. Melt the Ingredients Together
In a large saucepan, combine the chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, and butter. Place the pan over medium heat, stirring constantly. As the chocolate melts, the mixture will become thick and smooth. Keep stirring to prevent scorching.
Beginner Tip: If you’re worried about burning the chocolate, use a double boiler method by placing a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water and melting the ingredients slowly.
3. Pour and Spread the Mixture
Once fully melted and smooth, remove the mixture from the heat and pour it into the prepared baking dish. Use a spatula to spread it evenly. If you’re adding nuts, stir them into the mixture before pouring or sprinkle them on top.
4. Chill Until Firm
Place the dish in the refrigerator and let the fudge set for at least three hours. The fudge should be firm and easy to slice when fully chilled.
Beginner Tip: If you’re in a hurry, you can speed up the setting process by placing the fudge in the freezer for about an hour.
5. Slice and Serve
Once set, use the parchment paper overhang to lift the fudge from the pan. Place it on a cutting board and slice into small squares. Serve immediately or store for later.
Notes
- How to Tell if the Fudge is Ready to Slice – The fudge should be completely firm before cutting. If it feels too soft, let it chill longer.
- What to Do if the Chocolate is Too Thick to Spread – If your fudge mixture becomes too thick, try reheating it gently over low heat while stirring constantly.
- Preventing Grainy Texture – Always melt the chocolate over medium heat and stir continuously. Avoid overheating, as this can cause the chocolate to seize.
- Easier Cutting – Run a sharp knife under hot water before slicing to create clean cuts without cracking the fudge.
