  • Total Time: 2 hours 55 minutes
  • Yield: 12 rolls 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110Β°F, to activate the yeast)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (equivalent to one packet)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (plus 1 teaspoon for the yeast mixture)
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup fresh blueberries (or frozen, thawed, and drained)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

For the Frosting:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Prepare the Yeast Mixture
Begin by dissolving the active dry yeast in warm milk. Add a teaspoon of granulated sugar to the mixture to feed the yeast, encouraging it to activate. Allow it to sit for about 10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy. This step is crucial for ensuring your dough rises properly.

2. Make the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture with the remaining sugar, melted butter, and salt. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Gradually add the all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Once the dough starts to come together, turn it out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough feels too sticky, sprinkle in a little more flour, but be careful not to overdo it.

3. First Rise
Lightly grease a large bowl with oil or butter and place the dough inside, turning it to coat all sides. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free area for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

4. Prepare the Filling
While the dough rises, prepare the filling by mixing the brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Set aside. Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle, approximately 12Γ—18 inches. Brush the surface of the dough with melted butter, then evenly sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture across the dough. Finally, scatter the fresh blueberries over the sugar layer.

5. Form the Rolls
Starting at the long edge of the rectangle, roll the dough tightly into a log. Use your fingers to pinch the seam closed to prevent it from unraveling. Using a sharp knife or dental floss, cut the log into 12 equal pieces. Arrange the rolls in a greased 9Γ—13-inch baking dish, leaving a little space between them to allow for spreading.

6. Second Rise
Cover the rolls with a towel or plastic wrap and let them rise again for about 30 minutes. During this time, preheat your oven to 350Β°F.

7. Bake
Once the rolls have puffed up and are touching each other, place them in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown. The heavenly aroma will signal they’re almost ready.

8. Prepare the Frosting
While the rolls bake, prepare the frosting by beating the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, and continue mixing until the frosting is creamy and lump-free.

9. Finish
Remove the rolls from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before spreading the frosting generously over the top. The warmth of the rolls will cause the frosting to melt slightly, seeping into every crevice and making them even more irresistible.

Notes

  • Yeast Activation: Ensure your milk is warm but not too hot. Temperatures above 120Β°F can kill the yeast, preventing the dough from rising.
  • Rolling the Dough: For an even roll, use a rolling pin and work from the center outward. Aim for a consistent thickness.
  • Cutting the Rolls: Use unflavored dental floss or a very sharp knife to slice the rolls cleanly without squishing them.
  • Preventing Sticky Dough: If your dough feels too sticky, add flour gradually, one tablespoon at a time. Avoid adding too much, as it can make the rolls dense.
